Bringing Art to Homeless Children

Sac Town is known for its activities in arts and culture. The art forms seen here are theater arts and visual arts. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission established the arts council in 1977. From then on, this council is vigorously providing many programs of art in the city. These programs can be in the form of Arts education or arts at public places. Special programs are also conducted to bring art lovers and pioneers together.

One such program was recently conducted at a church in Sac Town.

On a beautiful Sunday morning in the midtown of Sac Town, a dozen teenage boys and girls accompanied by other younger children, all from homeless families gathered at the First United Methodist Church. The sunlit room of the church was full of life with young voices chatting away. These children had gathered here to paint sceneries of sunset, beaches and palm trees with their water colors. Many of the same group will also participate in a similar program this summer, called ‘Staging a Miracle’.

All this is a part of the Metropolitan Arts Commission’s five week long art program for homeless children. This is in effort to bring the homeless children together and give them a chance to draw, paint, sing, dance, to take art, music and dance lessons and also participate in photography. These children would be instructed by local artists in visual and performing arts who have volunteered their time for this cause.

Pastor Kathi McShane was elated that the church’s effort to build a community among artists, church and the homeless families was a grand success.

The program ‘Staging a Miracle’ aims to bring arts education to those children who spend most of their time changing shelters, a life that does not loan itself to arts and music classes. The art funding cuts at any public schools have made it more difficult for these children to afford a day’s lesson.

The group, ‘Staging a Miracle’ has been active from the past two summers training homeless children between the age group of 10 and 18 in visual and performing arts. They pioneered with performing arts and are now trying to expand their assistance to visual arts like painting, piano lessons and photography.

The program officials have their supplies from the company ‘Book of Dreams’. Together, they are reaching out to as many homeless children as possible catering to needs of their talents.

One of the various families that has benefited from ‘Staging a Miracle’ is Mrs. Hite and her children Jaccob and Bryanna aged 11 and 16 respectively. These children have found their hidden talent of singing and drawing through these programs. The family is very happy as they have found a wonderful outlet for expressing their talents.
